An extra , game is to be played to-morrow between j Dunlop and Gyles for the championship ; of the Dominion. ' j Games in round 12 resulted:— | Scott drew with Didsbury. Didsbury adopted the French defence. The whole game was very even, both players taking no risks. Each had a rook and six pawns and a draw was agreed to on the 31st. move. Gyles beat Smith, King's Franchetto | defence. A very short game ran on j book lines but Gyles obtained an advantage and held it. Smith resigned j at t'le 24th. move. ; Hicks beat Le Petel, Ruy Lopez open- j ing. Alter an even opening, on the j 23rd. move Hicks gained a pawn. Le j Petit gave up a knight for two passed j pawns. Hicks then checked with a, bishop and won an exchange. Later Hicks se*t a trap which Le Petit was unable to avoid, resigning on the 36th. move. Severne drew with Dunlop, French j defence. After exchanges Dunlop open- j ed a knight's file against Severne's king j and castling on the queen's side, set up j a strong attack with the queen and doubled rook and won a pawn. A | stubborn struggle ensued with careful j play on both sides. Dunlop, however, j failed to capture a pawn and Severne forced a draw at the 54th. move. Gyles Smith, King's Franchetto defence. Gyles obtained a freer game and better development. He was in temporary difficulties for some time but i emerged stronger and his superior de- ] vclopment won the game on the 24th. | move. Final results are:—Dunlop 8| wins, ; Gyles 8?., Severne 8, Kelling 7J, Jones j 6, Walt 6, Hicks 6, Pihl s*. |
