EXPLORATION OF STRATOSPHERE

ANOTHER ASCENT THIS MONTH Moscow, Dec. 24. Not satisfied with his ascent to 5G,000 feet in the world’s largest balloon, the U.S.S.R., last September, Captain Prokowies will attempt to penetrate even further into the stratosphere in January, his ambition being 74,500 feet. The same balloon will bo used this time, but the scientific direction will be the hands of Professor Molchanows, who declares that January is the most suitable time of the year, because its bright, clear days for long periods at a time, while the snow is covering over the whole Russian and Siberian landscape, make it better for landing than in the summer or autumn, when the rivers and lakes are open. Px-ofessor Molchanows is now experimenting to enable all observations to be recorded automatically and then transmitted by wireless to the earth.
