Received Today, 10.55 p.m. •'.;.;.■ M London Dec. 1. : During the trial of Captain 'Brynmor Miles, chief officer of the London Salvage Corps, who is held ; on a conspiracy charge, at Bow Street the prosecuting coun. sel said that ever since 1930 Miles was alleged to have been in the pay of Leopold Harris for the purpose of favouring him in the business of assessor.
■When the prosecution for the fire conspiracy became imminent in September, 1932; ho had the deep confi w -dace of 'those having charge of the. proceedings and at a time when sec. recy was paramount he betrayed their plans to Harris for money. Miles received a salary of £IO4O freo of income tax, free quarters for himself. a;i (1 family, together with light and fuel and a man servant. Thus he should have been ensured as being above this sort of temptation.*" He had received £25 monthly <fronj' Harris, with extra for special services. . ; also guaranteed Miles' banking account for £IOOO. i The case was adjourned to December. 11. .Miles was arrested on November 20 on a charge of conspiring with Leopold Harris, recently sentenced in the fire consiracy trial, to prevent due administration of justice. "When arrested he declared, "It is absolutely preposterous." .Detectives indicated more serious charges would be,, brought, against Miles, whereupon the magistrate said that there must be a heavier bail. Bail was forthcoming totalling £IO,OOO. Miles, who is 38 years of age, had a distinguished war record; he won the Military Cross, and was twice mentioned in dispatches.
