Press Association.—Copyright. Christchurch, Sep’. 12
j To-morrow is polling day in the Lyti telton by-election, and to-night candii dates and their supporting speakers made ! their final appeals to the electorate after j one of the most spectacular campa’gns in the history of New Zealand politics, j In the last two days there have been | 01 political meetings in the electorate, j Three Ministers, including the Actingj Prime Minister, and several members of i Parliament have taken an active part on I behalf of the Coalition candidate, Mr. I Freeman, and the Leader of the L: hour j Party and a strong body of Labour m rni- | hers have helped Mrs. McCombs. The j Independent Labour candidate, Mr. Hills has held fewer meetings and has been overlooked m the intensity of the struggle of recent days.
Mr. Coates addressed his last meeting in the campaign at Lytelton to-night. When he had finished he thanked the audience for an extraordinary good hearing. “I can't understand it,” he said. “I was told I would never get cut of here alive.”
There was another meeting at Lyttelton addressed by the Labour candidate and Labour members.
Mr. Ccatcs has had very good hearings at all his meetings. At some there have been interjections, but most of the noise has come from a few people. The only meetings at which organised interruption went near to denying a hearing to the speaker were some of the earlier meetings of Mr. Freeman.
