He I was a greatly respected resident of { Nelson since the “sixties,” and form--1 erly, for many years was one of the i proprietors of the Colonist, i Born in Lancaster, England, he j was taken by his parents to the West i Indies, when a few weeks cld, where j his father had a sugar plantation, j Both his parents died of yellow i fever, and when he was ten years of j age he returned to Lancaster and j Avas educated at the Lancaster Grami mar School. He served his appren- ! ticeship on the Lancaster Guardian in 18G2, and came to New Zealand i on the ship Electra, landing at Nelj son the following year. He took an I active interest in all movements for j the betterment of the people. He had ; been a member of the Foresters’ I Lodge since 1871.
Mr. Percy Bond, managing director of the Hawera Star, is a son, and the other son was the late Mr J. H. C. Bond, for many years Dominion Superintendent of the New Zealand Shipping Company.
MR. MUNGO MacCALLUM
The death has occurred of Mr Mungo L. MacCallum, leader-writer and book-reviewer for the Sydney Morning Herald, aged 49. His father, Sir Mungo MacCallum, is emeritus professor of Modern Literature at Sydney University.
Amazing Escape
PLANE OUT OF CONTROL
Press Association.—Coir'r'ght London, Sept. 11. The Daily Mail says the Schneider Cup pilot Stainsforth had an amazing escape when a secret now machine he was using got out of control. He jumped with s parachute but was thrown back into the cockpit by the rush of wind. The machine dived a further 700 feet and Stainsforth jumped again. He landed unhurt, but the plane pancaked to earth two miles away and was wrecked.
