Whangamomona County MEETING OF COUNCIL The Whangamomona County Council met yesterday when there were present Crs N. R. Cleland (in the chair) M. P. Ford, G. Gower, J. D. Law, W. J. Rawlinson, B. Neustroski, and E. B. Roberton. Mr A. R. Sandilands, manager of the Marackowhai estate, Tokirima, Ohura, wrote in support of previous correspondence asking that certain work be done on two bluffs in Heao, the survey of the road under review having been completed in May, 1930, and the road declared public in March 1931. It was decided to leave the matter to the riding members to inspect and report. Mr J. Garlick asked the council to put the Kiri Road into good order. The'road was impassable for horse and dray, ho said. The children had to go via the paddocks to school in preference to the road, down the. centre of which it was expected the creek would mostly be running. There was a small bridge on the verge of collapsie, and Uie road was badly in need of attention. The writer is to be informed that the council cannot bo expected to keep f,ffe road in good order when therates are so far in arrears. Cr Fold said work had been done on the road, but a lorry with chains on the wire,els undid any work that had been done,
Mr F. Neilsou asked tor attention to the Mangarc Road between Hodtlcr’s and Neilson’s where- water, bad been lying for 12 months. The rates had been paid regularly, it was stated, and the surfacemen will be instructed to clear the watertablcs as soon as possible. Mr H. Hendry asked for the removal of a fence from Domain Street, Whangamomona. The council decided to take no action in the matter. Mrs V. McMinn, Tangarakau. applied for a billiard saloon license. The license was granted, to be transferable if the saloon is opened in another building, the previous one having j been recently burnt down. The matter of the carrying out. of improvements to the Mangarc Road bv the use of unemployed had been gone into, wrote the Minister of Public Works, in reply the representations! made by the chairman at Wellington recently. The district engineer intended to explore more- thoroughly during the summer the potentialities of the area served by the road and other roads in the immediate vicinity. Meanwhile there was Insufficient evdence on which to base a decision, and further consideration would he withheld until the result of the district engineer's investigation was to hand. The settlers had been informed o l the reply, stated the chairman. Councillors considered the reply indicated that something might he done in the summer. The council decided to support Mr .1. Couller’s application for the metalling of Tawhiwhi Road and portion of Junction Road. Cr. Ford asked that some work he done 1o repair Hood damage on the Upper Mungaehu and Kohl Roads and to give access to Mr Henderson and other settlers. The chairman suggested that a telegram bo sent to the Minister expressing disappointment that men were being withdrawn from work in the flood areas. Owing to the- unsatisfactory state of the council’s rate collection the council could not do the work, and the settlers were being placed in an unfortunate position if the flood damage wore not cleared
