Motor Cyclists During the week-end :i parry of 2(1 motor cyclists made a trip to W haugaiimmona. The party spent the time looking around the country and left on the return journey about 3 pan. Ohura County Rates It is understood that several works of an important nature will be put in hand in tile near future in the Ohura County. Among these will be the metalling of approximately 14 miles of road, presumably to be undertaken by men recently put off the public works in the Ohura district. One road on which it is expected work will be done is the Tongaporutu Road running to Waitara from Ohura. About eight miles of metalling requires doing on that road. On Mokau-Ohura Road seven miles of m'S-talling have yet to be done, it is expected this work \. also receive consideration.

St. Andrew’s Floral Afternoon A beautiful array of flowers, potplants and shrubs was displayed at St. Andrew’s Hall yesterday when the Ladies Committece presented a floral afternoon in aid of the church funds. Large numbers of exhibits weha set out in an effective manner and a. large attendance resulted in the function being a success in every way. The proceeds amounted to approximately £ls. Among the exhibits wan a special display of primroses grown by Mr T. Lawson, which offered much by way of an attraction while a collection of narcissi exhibited by Mrs J. B. Ci'emow (Toko) also created much interest. A concert programme was presented during the evening and formed a fitting conclusion to the success of the day.

Both markets were stated to be firm, with no slackening j in the activity.

Stratford Band Dance The second of the series of dances organised by the lady members of the Stratford Band committee was held last night and the function was well ; attended. The dance proved to ho ■ highly successful and even more psp- 1 ular than the previous event and an; •enjoyable evening’s entertainment ■ was provided. Waite’s Adelphi Band rendered the dance music and Mr T. At rill acted as M.C. The monte j carlo novelty number was won by Mr Dickson and Miss J. Cook. St. John’s Ambulance The usual weekly practice and lecture evening, held in the A', and P. rooms last night, by the local branch of the St. John’s Ambulance Assn, was well attended, about 24 members being present. Following the practco hour, Dr. B. B. Armstrong continued his lecture on “blood circulation” The lectures and drills are being well attended and consequently members are becoming well advanced in first aid. With this to the credit of the local branch there is an endeavour to strengthen the corps and any person contemplating joining the division is requested to communicate with Mr O. Buckley, Broadway.

Department Thanked The Whaiigamomona County Council decided at its meeting yesterday to forward to the Public Works Department a letter of appreciation fox the excellent work done on the Kohn rat ahi Road from the main east highway to lilt; junction of the "VVhitianga Road. This has just been reformed and metalled and is now .handed over by the Department to the Council. Cr •j. D. Law said he thought it should be fitting if the council express its appreciation of ‘‘a really excellent job” The work had been carried out by unemployed relief labour in a firstclass manner, Cr Cl- Gower added his tribute to the work done on the Kohhuratahi Road, pointing out that nothing was too much trouble for the relief workers. Surveying the condition of the country roads as a whole, gaid Cr Law, it was striking what m tremendous help the Public WorksDepartment had been to the council. Had it not been for the help of the department he could nut see bow the council could have carried on.

County Council on the matter yesterday the Chairman said that it was estimated this could he obtained at a cost of three shillings a yard and the effect of the discovery would be that, they could keep the numerous unemployed men in the distinct employed close to their homes for a year or more. The Tangarakau Road, the Mold saddle and the Tahora Road jobs required doing and for these the supplies would he ideal. He considered the council should urge the Government to retain the men established there and go ahead with the work for a year or (wo. If there was any work to be done in the district, said Cr B. Neiistroski, it should be done now. Cr 10. B. Rohhcrton considered the'matter could not he pressed too urgently. Ou his suggestion if was decided to urge on the the Government the metalling of roads in the Tahora district by the utilisation of unemp’oyed men from Tangarakau, j.ud the utilisation of the metal deposits available within hall a mile of the settlement.
