AROUND THE RACECOURSES

o * Notes From North and South EARLY SPRING CANDIDATES By “Sir Oracle” Saturday was rather unique in (lie racing world, as there was not a single galloping fixture taking place anywhere in the Dominion. But from next Saturday onwuui, there will not he a racing break until after Christmas, As there will be racing at Ellerslie at the same time as the N.Z. Cup at Riccarton, it is highly unlikely that any of the three ■■ Auckland Cup candidates, Royal Artist, Speedmint, and Potomint will bo found going South. It almost appears as if Die New Zealand Cup will be competed for by a field of Riccarton trained horses. , , Two of Sir Charles Clifford's horses, Heather Glow and Copyist, are likely to come North from Riccarton for the Wanganui Spring meeting. Heather Glow is reputed to be one of the best class hacks in the South Island. Copyist, a well-bred gelding by Winning Hit—Miss Mimic, will be sporting silk for the first occasion. The Chokebore stable apparently has a high opinion of Copyist, as he has been entered for the Wanganui Guineas against Red Manfred, Impasto,

and company, in preference to Heather Glow, i As March Alone’s connections are hardly likely ; to send the Hawera hack to Riccarton for the New Zealand Cup, it looks as if Taranaki will not have a single representative in this years race. However, as the Auckland Racing Club is clashing with the New Zealand Cup Carnival at Riccarton, there is certain to be any amount of Taranaki interests at Ellerslie, to discount the province’s lack of representatives at the New Zealand Cup carnival. If they race at Marten next Wednesday, Impasto and D’Artagnan will be two, of the closest watched competitors at the fixture. These two young horses were front rankers last season, and they have been working solidly at Te Awamutu. Beth are rather gross customers, so may require a race or two before coming into their best. Croupier’s brother, Alignment, and Cherry King, lately ran five furlongs in Imin 1 4.5 sec. on the Takanini tracks. Such a fast gallop at this early stage of the season goes to show that both are extra speedy hacks. Alignment is still eligible for maiden fields, and. is one to remember the first time that he takes his place in such a field. He will have to strike something right out of the ordinary to get beaten. The Northern steeplechaser, Lucess, has now been turned out at Cambridge, and is not likely to race again until next year. On account of his success at Riccarton, Lucess had quite a successful winter. The Northern trainer-jockey, “Len” Manson, is expected to bring Tavern Knight and Cherry King to the coming Wanganui fixture. Tavern Knight had his “bubble” temporarily burst as the result of his recent disappointing showing at Ellerslie. Northern critics consider that he lias developed a dangerous habit of “hanging out” in his races. The Northen hack Tatyoon, resembles Cereal in that to date he has been a most unreliable and mi-1 settled horse at the barrier.. If he can conquer this fault this season, Tatyoon should be very prominent

from now onwards, no doubt, regarding his speed and stamina. Even though she lias had a most strenuous winter’s racing, Foreign Queen is being kept going with a view to competing at early spring meetings. There is not much of Foreign Queen, but what there is, is particularly hardy. Late Awapuni reports credit Princess Doreen with steadily on the road to recovery from her leg injury. However, it is unlikely that this brilliant three-year-old will be in lit enough condition to keep her early spring engagements. Diatomous, on the other hand, is bowling along in great style at Bulls, and is expected to be well in the money at his first start this season, which will probably be at Marton on Wednesday. Old Paganelli has lately been galloping at Te Rapa just as freely as ever he has ever done. Paganelli appears certain to be ready to face yet another strenuous racing season, and to give a good account of himself.
