ANNUAL SKI CHAMIONSHIPS

The Stratford Club

The Stratford Ski Club’s annual championships were held yesterday. The championship was awarded on points gained in the two races, the downhill and the slalom, and was won in spirited competition by Brian McMillan. Bruce McMillan was second and J. Carryer third. There was no snow at Manganui Hut and the tussock and scrub slope immediately above was also bare. Members, of the committee set out early in the morning and flagged a slalom course on the slope below the Policeman, which included icy snow in the early stages and a softer crust at the end. The downhill course was extended to a gully to the north of Manganui Gorge and finished in sott snow. A course for novices was also flagged in the gully. The slalom course was very difficult, and in the first run taxed the best cf the members. It was made a little easier for the second run. Thrilling ski-ing was seen in the later -stages of the downhill event, the first half of which needed care because of increasing iceiness. Brian McMillan covered the course in a fraction over 57s and Brian Murphy was a fifth of a second slower. Bruce McMillan was just shaded by J. Carryer, w T ho cracked a ski during the race.
