SENSATIONAL PLAY

WELLINGTON JUST WIN: TWENTY TO SEVENTEEN; CLOSE-FOUGHT SECOND HAikF Press Association. —Copyright. Wellington, Sept. 10. With a reputation for making a good showing against Wellington, Otago, in the final of their northern tour, met Wellington today. Thej visitors certainly made a good start, for in the first two minutes a potted goal gave them four points. Conditions were ideal for the game. The weather was fine, and there was only a light southerly breeze, against winch Wellington, winning the toss, played in the first spell. Fuller was absent from the Wellington team owing to an. injury and his place on the wing was taken by Killeen, Pollock moving up to dent re and Lilburnc coming in as full-back. The attendance was about 7000. The game started sensationally when Taylor, the Otago full-back, from out side the Wellington twenty-five, follow ing a clearing kick by Lilburue, putted a beautiful goal. This beginning was but a prelude to solid pressure Cixerted by Otago, and Wellington were mainly kept on the defensive for a long spell. A feature of the visitors’ play was their powerful kicking, and this assisted in keeping them well placed. When Wellington wore penalised in a scrum, Taylor made no mistake.

Toward the end of the spell Wellington brightened up and after two attempts had failed a short burst of passing ended in Robins scoring. As the .spell had begun sensationally, so did it end. H. McSkimming broke away brilliantly from the Otago twenty-five and passed to Allen, wlnj outstripped the opposition to score a great try. Taylor missed the kick. Otago 10 Wellington 3

The Wellington backs, who had not worked as a smooth combination, were rearranged for the second half, and Wellington opened the spell with bustling tactics, backs and forwards showing up much better. Infringements spoilt much of their work, and tho Otago defence 1 was solid. The Otago forwards, who had gone well in the first spell were still playing their parti After Otago had advanced, into Wellington territory, Page made a great dash up the centre of the field, and then passed to Lilburnc, who scored a spectacular try. Lilburnc converted. Otago 10, Wellington 8. With a penalty goal Lilburnc put, Wellington in the lead for the first time, but it was short-lived, for M. McSkimming, getting the ball from a scramble in the Wellington twentyfive, potted a spectacular goal. Solid play followed, and then Lilburue, with a penalty goal again put Well■ington.on level terms again. The points 'had not been long up on tho board ■before a penalty goal by Taylor, who was playing a good game, gave Otago tho lead once more. 17—14. The score see-sawed very quickly again. A loose bustling by Wellington ended in Killeen scoring. Lilburnc missed. H. McSkimming, who had played a good game, retired injured, and was replaced by Jones. With one minute to go Kilby launched i« brilliant Wellington back movement from his own twenty-fiive, and it end ed in Robins scoring. Lilburue. missed, and the game, in which there had been some sensational incidents, ended. Wellington 20 Otago 17
