HARD TASK CONFRONTS POLICE IN SHEETING HOME INSURANCE FRAUDS

Women Prominent in Operations Press Association —Copyright. Reed. Today, 10.15 a.m. Sydney, Today. POLICE al'ege that the gang recently conducting insurance 'frauds have defied arrest for sixteen years, during which it is known their operations cost insurance companies nearly £BO,OOO.
Detectives discovered the gang came from New Zealand in 1917 after an amazing series of frauds in that country. They commenced here immediately, but larger operations were not begun till 1920, after which there was a remarkable run of small fires in suburban areas in swift succession, claims of from £2O to £GO arousing no suspicidn, but were paid without demur. The gang, which comprised ten to twelve persons, including at least one trained in insurance practice and another" skilled in medical matters, reaped' a'/ich harvest in fake accident cases.
Women';were prominent in the frauds, which were very difficult to follow.
