THE depression is not wholly to blame for the drop of nearly 1 3 per cent, in the registration of motor vehicles during the current year. The weight of taxation now imposed is having a very depressing effect on motoring, and this is revealed, not only in the lowered registrations of vehicles, but also in the decrease in the revenue received from taxation of motor spirit. The revenue received from the taxation of motor spirit during last year declined perceptibly below that of the previous year. During the month of May this year 7,101,446 gallons of motor spirit was imported, as compared with 9,217,956 gallons during May, 1932, while for the five months of this calendar year 25 201 097 gallons were imported, as against 26,097,002 gallons for the corresponding period of last year. A cheaper motor spirit would undoubtedly result m a larger consumption, and it would be well worth investigating to see whether a reduction of taxation, if accompanied by a corresponding retail price reduction, would not result in a larger tax yield. Nothing is more certain than that if the present level of taxation which is imposed on motorists is maintained, the shrinkage will continue throughout the current financial year.
