PLEA FOR STABILISATION
Press Association—Oooyrieht ! , _ Wellington, July 4. A plea...for /the stabilisation of rates on goods and parcels as applied to both road and rail services was made to-day by Mr. W. Schierning, district traffic manager for the Railways Department at Wellington, before No. 6 Transport Licensing Authority. He said the railr way rates in almost all instances were taken as a basis by road services and should the department find it desirable to lower rates in order to meet competition the opposition concerns usually made a further reduction in rates.
The railway system played an essential part in the transport industry of New Zealand, Mr. Schierning said, and could not be dispensed with; road services did not cater for all transport. The Railway Department did not select its goods as did many road operators who chose higher freighted goods and left lower freighted commodities. He trusted the department would not be placed at a disadvantage when the scale of charges was compiled.
