The end of the shipping dispute is welcomed by merchants concerned with the Canterbury grain and produce market. There has not been a boat to the | North Island for nearly three weeks to jtake quantities of potatoes. It is now j certain that the Kiwitea will load at JLyttelton and leave probably next ! Tuesday. The potato section of the market is still inactive. Growers are not offering any quantity and the demand from Auckland is weak. The price remains unaltered. The onion section is firmer and the current price is £2 10s to £2 15s a ton on trucks. There is no volume of business.

Satisfaction with the settlement of the j shipping and the mining disputes was expressed by the Governor-General, Lord ißledisloe, during an address at the anjnual meeting of the Flying Angel Mission to seamen to-day. ! "A twofold event has occurred in the i last 48 hours for which every serious i thinking man and women in the Dominlion must be devoutly thankful," said His j Excellency. "Two industrial disputes, one of them in the shipping world which I threatened serious unrest and disquiet, jif continued through the winter, have j been amicably settled. i "It was with real joy and with the j feeling that I had the people of the 'Dominion behind me that I despatched ! telegrams to-day to the Ministers of I Mines and the Minister of Marine cxj pressing profound delight that the two I sides to these disputes had seen fit to [come to a settlement, remembering that jif ever it were true in the past it is •true to-day that when one member of |the community suffers the other memj bers suffer." His Excellency said he was confident jit was consideration for the public interest that had been mainly instrumental in bringing about the agreements.
