Cotton on the last green needed a five-yard putt to equal the leader, Davies, 293. Cotton surveyed the line carefully and when he missed some spectators laughed aloud and shouted "Hurrah." "Very funny, isn't it?" retorted Cotton as he left the green.

Afterwards ho said: "I did not deservo to win, finishing with two fives but had done nothing to deserve the unkind demonstration," Cotton, who was twice the winner, was an amazing failure, He played his worst golf of the match, disappointing 5000 followers.
