On April 27 he disappeared, and later Mrs. Stewart discovered that a diamond ring, valued at £SO, was missing. Subsequently Mayo communicated with Mrs. Stewart, and told her the ring was at a city pawnshop. ' When interviewed ,by Detective Reid, accused said he pawned the ring and had then gone away and spent the money on a drinking bout. When he returned to Wellington he was destitute. Mr. J. D. Willis, for accused, said that drink was Mayo's trouble. Accused, counsel added, was an ex-Im-perial Army officer, who was wounded during the War.
