STOLE DIAMOND RING

The theft of a diamond ring from people with whom l;e had been staying for two years and by whom he was accepted as one of the family was admitted by Leonard George Mayo, draper, aged 44, who appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. On the recommendation of the Probation Officer, Mr. T. P. Mills, the Magistrate admitted accused to probation for 12 months. Detective-Sergeant Revel] said that tor the past two years, Mayo had been -giving with Mr. and Mrs. Stewart, in T/inakori Road. On April 27 he disappeared, and later Mrs. Stewart discovered that a diamond ring, valued at £SO, was missing. Subsequently Mayo communicated with Mrs. Stewart, and told her the ring was at a city pawnshop. ' When interviewed ,by Detective Reid, accused said he pawned the ring and had then gone away and spent the money on a drinking bout. When he returned to Wellington he was destitute. Mr. J. D. Willis, for accused, said that drink was Mayo's trouble. Accused, counsel added, was an ex-Im-perial Army officer, who was wounded during the War. The Magistrate ordered that accused should take out a prohibition order and that restitution should be made within seven days of £5 which he had received for the ring.
