RATE ARREARS
Ohura County £9OOO Behind SERIOUS POSITION The finances of the Ohura County Council are in an extremely serious l position. At Wednesday's meeting of the council the clerk, Mr. J. F. McClenaghan, stated that the rates outstanding amounted to £9640. The liabilities to date amounted to £4137, and the expenditure of a further £5500.
| The chairman, Mr. G. Denison, said !he had received a letter from the ! manager of the Bank of New Zealand ! which stated that for the current year a limit of £5500 was approved, and , that no excess of that figure would he permitted. It was realised that this reduction in the limit might necessi- | tate the county having: to make arj rangements with its lenders regard--1 ing interest on loans, and the bank ad- ' vised that that should be done as ! soon as possible. I With regard to outstanding rat'-s | amounting to £OOOO, obviously a dei termincd effort to collect that money J would need to be made, and the bank j suggested that better results might) j lm achieved by making demands on the j first mortgagee wherever possible. j A lively discussion ensued, during j which a councillor recommended that j a receiver be called in. It was finally j resolved that the hank's letter be re- ! ceived and that the Question of fini mice be discussed at a special meetj ing of the council on May 24.
