Paraguay today formally declared war against Bolivia. They have been engaged in an hitherto undeclared war in the Gran Chako border area since last I summer. President Eusebio Ayada, using fhe j authority recently voted him by Conj gress, signed the declaration at 11 I a.m. News of the signing provoked a j great demonstration. which soon i reached the streets. The celebrations | are the most widespread since hosj tilities began last June. Crowds forgI ed through the thoroughfare singing and cheering. Paraguay hopes that j formal declarations of neutrality by j Argentina, and Chile, and perhaps by ] Peru and Brazil will hamper the j Bolivian importation of supplies. Both nations are determined that j the present struggle shall result in. a . definite and permanent settlement of [ the Gran Chako strife.
