Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Reid left for Wellington this morning. Mrs. R. Masters will accompany her husband, the Hon. R. Masters, to England. Mr. Percy Thomson is at present in Wanganui attending a meeting of No. 5 Transport Licensing Authority. Mr. Gordon Irving, a former wellknown resident of Stratford, is on a brief visit to the town. Steven, medical superintendent at the Stratford Hospital, is at present on holiday and Dr. Thorpe is acting in a relieving capacity. Dr. Thorpe has been abroad for some time. Mr. Paul Vinogradoff, the famous pianist, is making another tour of New Zealand and there is a strong possibility, providing suitable arrangements can be made, that ho will visit Stratford at the end of the present month.
Rev. E. F. Cox, who has been elected Mayor of Dunedin, spent his boyhood in Taranaki. He was brought up in the Opunake district, where hit* father was a well-known early resident. Mr. W. Pettigrew, of Stratford, was intimately acquainted with the whole family.
Mr. Peter Duffy was a passenger by mail train today for Wellington, on the commencement of a long trip. Mr. Duffy is bound for. County Monaghan, Ireland, his birthplace. He has spent about 29 years in New Zealand and for the greater part of that time resided in various districts in Taranaki.
Wjicu Mr. J. W. McMillan, Mayorelect took the chair at the annual meeting of the Stratford Plunkct Society yesterday, the president, Mrs. J. C. McDowall, welcomed him in his official capacity, but added that he was no stranger to members as he had served tho society as a member of the advisory board, which had been very helpful to the society.
Canon H. R. B. Gillespie, vicar of Morrinsville, has been appointed archdeacon of Waikato. He will retain his canonry at St. Peter’s Cathedral as canon in charge of the mission work in the diocese. Archdeacon Gillespie obtained his M.A., B.D. and LL.R. degrees at Trinity College, Dublin. He came to New Zealand in 1923, and was vicar at Helen,sville and Otako.
The King on the recommendation of Lord Londonderry has approved the appointment of Air Chief Marshal Sir Edward Ellington as Chief of the Air Staff in succession to the late Air Chief Marshal Sir Geoffrey Salmond, with effect from May 22. On that date the Marshal of Royal Air Force Sir John Salmond, who had temporarily resumed the duties of the post held by his brother, will pease to act.
