SOUTHERN PRODUCE MARKETS

Little Business Passing Press Association —Copyright Cliristchurch, May 5. There has been little business passing in the produce markets during the week, and the inactivity in the potato market is causing concern. Even although there is little activity, interest in the probable trend of the demand for Canterbury potatoes is very keen. Cabled advice from Australia that growers there have made repeated representations to have the embargo continued arc not considered encouraging to the prospect of its being lifted. The threats of a shipping hold-up are worrying. So far this season the quantities which have been sent to the North Island arc much below those of previous years for the corresponding period. The Waipiata, which was to have left Lyttelton this week, has been held tip at Dunedin by the dispute. Normally there would be another vessel leaving next week. Quotations for potatoes have not been altered this week and there is very little inquiry from the North Island yet.
