ESCAPE FROM CUSTODY
Maori Awaiting Tria! Press Association.— Copyright. Gisborne, May 5. A Native, Pekawa Pouaka, of Whakataka, arrested at Ruatoria and charged with the theft of a motor-car, escaped from custody. No trace could be found for several days, but ultimately Constable Ryan stationed himself day and night on a high hill overlooking the country round Tuparoa, whence, through glasses, he observed the escapee and then effected his arrest.
