GERMAN DEVELOPMENTS THE CAUSE LORD HAILSHAM’S STATEMENT Press Association—Copyright London, May 2—Lord Hailshain, deputising for Sir John Simon, proposed the toast of International Goodwill at the London Chamber of Commerce dinner. He said he hr>l notes of Sir John Simon’s speech, which began: “It is useless to conceal the fact that the European situation has seriously deteriorated of recent months owing to the German developments.” Lord Hailsham commented amid laughter: “That is not a promising start, so I decided to discontinue using his notes. Nevertheless Germany has aroused disquiet m Britain and elsewhere. While I am not desirous of criticising or condemning political events in another country I am justified in saying we must hope Germany’s conduct of its affairs and its attitude towards international problems will do something to quieten the anxiety.”
