FREE STATE
CURIOUS CONSTITUTIONAL POSITION
Disappearance of the Oath
STATEMENT BEING PREPARED
j Press Association. —Copyright, r I Reed. Today, 8.10 a.m. ’ | London, April 25 —The Sun learns j that a statement is being prepared ! outlining Britain’s interpretation of j the Free State’s position from May j 3, when the oath disappears. It is a i highly complicated constitutional > position, wherein the Free State retains the membership of the Empire, enjoying privileges apart from Ottawa, and Irishmen remaining British subjects under the Anglo-Irish j Treaty, the Balfour Declaration, and j the Statute of Westminster. Secesj sion is only possible by the declarai tion of a Republic, which is dependent on Ulster’s willingness to unite and the Free State becoming seifsupporting, of which there is little prospect.
