Weather Spoils Excursion Inclement weather and the fact that the summer season is practically passed accounted for only a small number of passengers travelling on the excursion train from Hawera to New Plymouth yesterday. It is understood that arriving at New Plymouth the train carried under 1«0 passengers.
Donation to Winter Show A donation of three guineas to be added to the list of prize moneys of the Stratford Poultry and " Winter Show Association was received from Messrs. J. B. McEwgii find Company, Ltd., New Plymouth, by the association a 1 the meeting on Saturday night and a vote of thanks was accorded tiic donors for their generous contribution.
More District Courts at Show
From remarks passed by a number of members at the meeting of the executive committee of the Stratford Poultry and Winter Show Association held on Saturday night, there is every indication that there will be an addition in the number of district courts at the forthcoming show. This class of exhibiting is annually receiving more support and is causing keen competition between the various central Taranaki districts.
St. John Ambulance Advice has been received by the president of the St. John Ambulance Society that the New Plymouth team will visit Stratford on Tuesday next to give a demonstration in ambulance work. Those wlioare interested are invited to be present at the A. and P. rooms at S p.m. There is no charge for admission, and it is hoped a large number will lake advantage of this opportunity of learning something about the practical work of the association.
Poultry and Fruit A total clearance of 100 pens of poultry was effected at Newton King's Mart sale on Saturday after-noon. Large consignments of fruit wove also disposed of. and the usual sale of furniture and sundries was held. A range of prices is as follows: Poultry—Hens from Is to 2s 4d; roosters. Is to 2s Id: ducks, Is to Is 9d; turkey hens 2s 9d to Cs fid; gobblers from (is to 7s 3d; Black Orpington pullets (is fid; White Leghorn pullets 4s 9d and ss. Fruit—Dessert apples 2s to 2s 9d; cooking 2s to 2s Gd; pears to 2s 9d; tomatoes 2s to 2s 3d per quarter; Hawke's Bay pumpkins 6s 6d sack.
Stock Prices A rood yarding of cattle came under the hammer at the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company's Pale at Mntau on Friday. A range of prices is as follow: P.A cows up to £2 10s, P.A. steers up to £2, 21-year steers up to £2 Bs, steers £2 jns £2 i:?s £2 14s. £3 ss. cows £2 3s and £2 lis, hulls £3 Is, £o io p,3 i>t«. £3 I.fi'<. bullocks £2 lis, £", 9s £3 8s Bulls were yarded in good numbers, and sold well, while the yarding of steers kept buyers busy for some time.
Stratford Soccer Club During the past week or two the Stratford Association Football Club has been resuscitated, and the annual meeting will be held in Smith's tearooms to-morrow night. It is understood that the club has received considerable, impetus by the enthusiasm of a large number of new members With the result that it is definitely stated that an eleven will be fielded throughout the season. The ciub dropped into a more or less moribund state earlv last, season, owing to travelling and* other difficulties, but the president Mr T. M. Smith, is in receipt of advice that. New Plymouth teams arc willing to travel as far as lnglcwood to meet, the Stratford team.
Hockey at Mahoo . . A large amount of support is being accorded hockey in the Mahoe district, this year. A team has been formed and it is understood that it Will bo entered in the junior competition. \s the large majority of the playing enthusiasts are new to the game the Stratford men's club is giving the team as much assistance as and towards this end a numbci _of players journeyed to Mahoe during the week-end and a practice match was played, the respective sides being chosen from both Mahoe and Stiatford players. Mr. J. Ebbett accompanied the Stratford players and imparted «ome useful information and advice to the members of the new team.
