Mr R. Spiers, the "works manager, stated today that some of these men had been taken on to assist the foreman in killing to maintain the town supply. He gave a further assurance that there was no likelihood of a meat shortage in Hamilton. Apart from the abattoirs the works are deserted, all the strikers having departed yesterday. AUCKLAND WORKS IN OPERATION Auckland, Today.—Both the Westfield and the Southdown freezing works are in operation toaay. the response to a call for labour being fully adequate. At Westfleld it is reported all departments are working and at Southdown all departments for which labour was sought. There was a rush for jobs at the grading stores and some men who were unsuccessful there immediately went to Westfleld. As far as is ascertainable no union men are working. Some assembled outside the gates, but there was no. suggestion of trouble.
