AVON MEMBERS ENTERTAINED REMINISCENCES IN CONNECTION WITH THE GAME An enjoyable social evening was held by the Avon Bowling Club in the Windsor Tea Rooms last night to entertain the new members of the club. Close on sixty were present. The entertainment took the form of a musical evening and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The president*. Mr. H. L. Betts, after apologising for the absence of Mr. W. E. Williams, president of the Stratford Bowling Club, gave a brief history of the Avon Club's activities since its inception, and spoke of the good progress that had been made.' In addition to the various items given, community singing was indulged in and was taken up with enthusiasm; The following artists rendered items: Mr. Simpson (humour), Mr. G. Dick (flute solos), Messi;s. Baden Bellringer, J. Weston, W. P. Oakey (New Plymouth), Lonsdale, H. L. Betts (songs), Dick and Betts (flute duet), Brennan (musical monologue), Soundy (recitation). The accompaniments were played by Mr. J. Edmondson (piano) and Mr. G. Carter (violin). Mr. P. Keller gave an interesting series Qf. reminiscences of experiences in the course of his duties in the back country. ' Mr. E. Dingle, of New Plymouth, gave an interesting address on the early history of bowling in which' he stated that New Zealand's first bowling club was formed in Auckland in 1861, and the second club was formed in New Plymouth. Mr.'Buchanan,'of Christchurch, who is on a visit to Stratford, spoke on bowling generally, in which he referred to the good fellowship existing in bowling clubs throughout New Zealand. , "' Mr. Betts announced that an anony- , tnouff *d<shof had * given two trophies, one a/ silver clip, for beginners only, and a bowling case for competition among second and third year players.
