KAWARAU DAM
OPENING OF THE GATES MINING VENTURES END FOR SEASON Special Service DUNEDIN, To-day.—Mr. T. M. Ball, district engineer of the Public Works Department, informed a . reporter yesterday that it had been decided to open the gates of the Kawarau dam on Saturday. The reason for th>is dceision, it was stated, was that it was considered desirable to lower the level of the lake before the spring freshes commenced, and with the increasing warmth of the days and the consequent setting in of the thaw these could not long be delayed. In addition, the Cromwell Development Company now desired to put its plant into operation for the purpose of providing water for stock in the areas served by the company's races. Mr. Ball stated that it was possible that the gates might be closed for one clay during next week in order to allow the engineer for the Amalgamated Kawarau Company to inspect the site of the proposed new dam, but as the water would be shut off tor only a lew hours this would not be of any service to miners. For all practical purposes mining operations insofar as they are affected by the closing of the dam gates, will cease on Saturday.
