STRATFORD UNEMPLOYED ARRANGE FOR CHRISTMAS CHEER APPEAL
APPLICATION FOR BOOT REPAIRING SUBSIDY The usual fortnightly meeting of the Stratford Unemployed Association executive was held in the Municipal Chambers last evening, Mr. A. J. Harper presiding. The appointment cf a representative on the Unemployment Committee to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr. P. McDonald was pro. ceeded with, and on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. W. Sullivan, the secretary, Mr. \V. Holmes, was elected to fill the position. In discussing the question of boot repairing, the secretary inti. mated that Auckland had been granted a subsidy of £5 a week from the Unemployment Board towards its boot repairing depot, and it was ultimately decided that Straford make applicaion for similar assistance. The question of a change-over in the system of allocating work was dealt with, and though resolutions by both the Unemployment Committee | and the Be rough Council were opposed to the views of the unemployed | themselves, it was felt that little! coiad be done in the meantime and! that the protest carried at the gen-1 eral meeting last Friday go forward. At the invitation of the executive, Mr. J. Cabot was then heard in connection with a scheme to bring in funds for the assistance of me unemployed. He detailed his plans whereby he was sure substantial benent would accrue, and it was eventually decided tnat the executive co-operate with Mr. Cabot in his scheme to assist in a successful issue.
ivir. Cabot was thanked for his attenuance and tile interest dispiayeu in helping the executive in its work. Referring to the question of providing Christmas cheer for the unemployed, tne chairman said he would like .something dennite decided upon, and he was sure that if taken in hand at once the result would be a huge success. He suggested that a number of collection boxes, suitably worded, be, obtained and distributed among the business houses ot the town. Tney ecuiu have a Christmas to take place a nignt or two before December 25, Toys could be distributed to the children and if lunds allowed a small present could be issued to the parents. On the motion of Mr. W. Holmes, seconded by Mr. G. E. Ireland, it was decided that the making of boxes be left in the hands of Mr. W. Sullivan, wno was instructed to take the matter up immediately. The Sell-help Club and other organ, isations are to be written to asking for their co.operation.
