Thu unusual course of appointing [ a resident of the district who is not j a member of the ccnncil to be Mayor! for the remainder of the term was : adopted by the Birkenhead Borough i Council at a special meeting on | Tuesday evening. It elected Mr. i Ceorgc Mills, an ex.Fenator of the! State of Alberta, Canada, who arrived , in Now Zealand in 1929, to i?ll the vacancy caused by the death < f Mr, J. P. McPhail, who was elected Mayor at the poll in May last year.
