SCOTS PULL DOWN UNION JACK

SCOTTISH STANDARD HOISTED Two hundred Scottish National, ists marked the celebration of Bannockburn Day at Stirling, by rushing the castle, hauling down the Union Jack and hoisting the Scottish Standard in its stead. The leader of the attacking party was a woman. Bannockburn was the battle, outside the walls of Stirling, in which, in 1314, the Scottish, hero, Rl-'bert Bruce, defeated the English King Edward 11. At the close of the celebration ot the vict-ry, Miss Wendy Wood, the Scottish writer, urged that it. was an insult that the English Hag should be dying over the castle on such a day. The garrison, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, were at their annual sports, so the crowd had no difficulty in storming the flagstaff. it was only a few minutes, however, before the Scottish Standard was hauled down again, and the Union .lack, amid boos and cries, rehoisted into its place. Miss Wood, in an interview, r.aid: "I thought it a sharne that the Scottish Standard should not fly from Stirling Castle,; on • the ■ anniversary of the Battle, of Ban. nockburn and immediately after 1 had expressed that view a band cf volunteers j0...-u in a raid on the castle."
