The outbreak was prevented from reaching the spirit, but thousands of gallons of beer poured into the street. Four engines pumped water through the roof, and the floor, which when emerged was nearly at boiling point. Smoke helmets weire used by the firemen as a protection against the fumes. Vast clouds of smoke issuing from the building shrouded the Rivet Mersey, and traffic in nearby streets was delayed in the C'--g. After a two-hour battle the out. j break was got under control.
