SWINDELL GIVES EVI- : DENCE GRANT TO LABOUR PARTY MADE OUT OF GRATITUDE SYDNEY, Friday.—At th e mechanical hare inquiry today, Frederick Shaver Swindell, a prominent figure in greyhound racing, entered the witness box and was questioned about £6OOO he had received from Mr, J. F„ Booth,
He said that ho had paid £3IOO for State Labcur Party advertising, and had agreed to back the Labour Party’s advertising bill during The Federal elections. He admitted that greyhound racing was legalised a day or two after that decision, Mr. Swindell went on to say that he had made a grant to the Labour Partv, which had no ml'ney, “out, of gratitude;” He had sat for many months on Mr. Gosling’s doorstep, but accpnlplished nothing through him. Mr Gosling was formerly Chief Secretary The £3OOO for advertising was paid’ to Mr. McCauley, director of the party’s advertising. Mr. McCauley was the cx-Prcmier Mr. J. T. Lang’s private' secretary. He was questioned at length about his with greyhound companies' and in regard to allegations made by previous witnesses. He denied telling anyone that “J.T.,” meaning. Mr. Lang, had insisted that he should .have three seats on the board of a certain coursing company. He said he had made no reference about Mr. Lang to anyone. Questions were also put to Mr. Swindell about. 12,000 shares which Mr. ( Jack Munir had said were to be given to him. Tie replied that there had been personal and company differences with Mr. Munro involving at least that amount, and he (Mr. Swindell) saw a chance of squaring the ledger with Mr. Munro. (ft was a perfectly open transaction. The Royal Commissioner later remarked : “In answering these questions. Mr. Swindell, I dien’t want you to think L am a simple-minded per. son.” Th,e. hearing was adjourned.
