July 19.—The Federal forces of President Getulio Vargas yesterday initiated a minor ofj fensive against (he rebels of Sao Paulo. In a short advance into Sao Paulo from the State of Rio do Janeiro throe towns were taken, and aeroplanes bombed (he airfields of Sao Paulo city, the capital of the State. Federal forces captured Formoso, 15 miles south of Federal headquarters at Rezemh-% Rio de Janeiro State. General Jorge Pinheiro and bis Federal troops look the Sao Panic villages of Passa Qnotro and Sao Jose dns Barroiros. There were reports of several rebel casualties. The loyalists navy baited the steam or Mariam, en route to Santos, loaded with grain. The Government has ordered that port closed in an attempt to starve out the rebels.
