RELIEVING DISTRESS IN UNITED STATES
MR. HOOVER WILL SIGN NEW MEASURE San Francisco Examiner Cable. WASHINGTON. July 19. From his camp on the Rapidan yesterday, President Hoover issued a forma! statement through the White House saying that he would sign the 2,122.000,000 dollar Relief Biil on Tuesday. The President said that he wished co thank the leaders of both parties for co-operating in the legislation, which he considered “a strong step towards recovery." However, he took a parting shot at Speaker Gamer for some of the “oh. noxious features” of the Bill, which had been eliminated after “they had so long delayed action.” He specifi. cally referred to the “pork barrel infection that the loans to the States for the relief of distress should be based upon population instead of reed, and the provisions for the establishment of a gigantic centralised banking business.” The President said that in the 300,000,000 dollars for relief tn States, “we have a solid, back-log of assurance that there need be no hunger and cold in the United States.”
