MS. BALDWIN’S BELIEF j OTTAWA j *■ Press Association. —Copyright. QUEBEC, July 18. —The leader of Ihe British delegation (Mr. Stanley Baldwin) sees in the Ottawa eon. Terence a double opportunity. In a statement on his arrival here tonight lie spoke first tof the opportunity at Ottawa to make trade agreements and thus promote the well-being of every unit of the Empire. That was
a cause which for its own sake lay close to all hearts, but there was •«-'ther opportunity. “We believe,” Mr. Baldwin declares. “that by the methods we adept we can set an example to the whole world in breaking down obstacles to commerce, in aiding a revival of i agriculture, Industry and trade, and I so bring our peoples safely through j the tragic depression of the recent ? time.”
Mr. Baldwin expressed the pleasure of the delegation at being in Canada on the way to “what we hope and believe will he one of the most momentous gatherings in the history of
the British Empire.” The fact that so many from the United Kingdom bad come to Canada was evidence of
the importance all in Great Britain attached to the conference, he sain. Official greetings to (he delegates were given by Dominion, provincial and municipal officials. Thousands of. people lined the cliff behind the dock, sounding a royal welcome. The heads of all the delegations express* cd hope for the success of the con, ference.
The major contingent, of the del gates will reach Ottawa Tuesda;
They will be met by the Prime Minister, Mr. R. B. Bennett, members oil the Cabinet and other high personages.
The Irish Free State delegates paid a. formal call on Mr. Bennett today and were shown over Parliament Buildings. The conference will open in the House of Commons chamber cn Thursday.
The British delegation recognises that meat will be one of the outstanding features at the conference, according to the Daily Telegraph’s correspondent aboard t lie Empress cf Britain. The delegation devoted long discussions to (he British policy, dependent on the Dominions' proposals, but it is clear taxes on foreign meat have not been excluded The question probably will he linked with a quota and the restriction of output as the sole means of raising nrices to growers. Mr. Bennett telegraphed that he will welcome the Australian and New Zealand delegations when they arrive at Ottawa at noon to-m&rrow. The British, South African, Bister and Rhodesian delegations will reach Ottawa a few hours earlier. The Canadians have already assembled and the Irish Free State representa. lives were first on the spot- Their status is still in doubt in view of tho failure of Mr. de Valera’s negotiations with Mr. MacDonald.
