TRADE WITH EAST INDIES

; NEW ZEALAND'S OPPORTUNITY i~'i i - r ', ( i VALUE of direct shipping The New Zeaalnd business men That New Zealand business men should, thoroughly investigate the possibility of increased trade with the East is the opinion of Captain F. Bauer, vice-consul for the Netherlands at Auckland. Less than two years ago, said Captain Bauer recently, the Royal Dutch Packet Navigation Company, with headquarters in Batavia, Dutch East Indies, opened a new line from Batavia to the east coast of Africa and Captown via Mauritius. In the first year the steamers Houtman and Tas man got little cargo, but gradually the trade increased and last month the Hcufpian arrived at Batavia with a full cargo of 4200 tons. More and more j fruit was being shipped from Africa, and the quantity was excellent. “Passengers from Africa are con-; tinually arriving in the Dutch East j Indies to investigate the possibilities of trade with the East, and business | men from the East are makng trips | to Africa for the same purpose,” said I Captain Bauer. “It is a striking ex- i ample of what can be done in a. short time if direct shipping is established. Is New Zealand going to let this op. portunity pass by? Is it always to be isolated from trade with the Dutch East Indies, China, the Philippines,] British India and Africa?” ( Cargo from the Dutch East Indies! to Africa, said Captain Bauer, includ-j ed.a great quantity of goods from] Australia, transhipped at Batavi. New Zealand, lie said, had the same chance < as Australia and Africa. “The longer j the New Zealand business men wait the less chance they will have,” he declared.
