CHIEF OFFICER ILL

The chief officer of the Canopus, Mr. Gerald Sharpe, was taken seriously ill on the voyage from Auckland to Westport in the early hours of Saturday morning, and wireless was set in motion asking for advice from Auckland. The master was advised to make haste to New Plymouth with the patient, and this was done. Mr. Sharpe was landed and admitted to hospital at 6.45 p.m., when he was operated upon as soon as possible. He is reported to be progress : ing satisfactorily. This is only one of the many occasions on which radio communication has proved invaluable in succouring people in distress.
