WORK ON THE MOUNTAIN

WHANGAMOMONA COMPLAINT The complaint that unemployed men were being given unessential work on Mount Egmont for the benefit of tourists while the Whangamomona County, which could employ men on work that would be productive, could not get the men to work, was made by Cr. Gower at the meeting of the Whangamomona County Council on Monday. He recognised, he said, that men could not be expected to go out into the country to work for two days a week, but he thought inducements in the shape of extra work could be offered by farmers and others. He himself was prepared to feed and accommodate one or more single men provided they would work on his farm during the four days they were not working for the council, and he would also pay them a small wage. He felt that other settlers might be prepared to do the same, and in that way the council would have men available to do road work that would give settlers improved access.
