WERE JOBLESS GIRLS HOAXED? SYDNEY, May 22. After hours of weary waiting outside an empty shop in Castlereagh Street, City, last night, over 100 girls, who went there in answer to an advertisement for waitresses, drifted away, suspecting’ that they had been the victims tjf a hoax. The advertisement also called for applications for an “experienced hand, used to American quick-lunch service,” and fully 30 men joined in the queue. One of the girls, who had tramped the city all day in search of work, was so exhausted after several hours of. waiting that she almost collapsed. Applicants were told to attend after 7 p.m. . No date was mentioned in the advertisement, which was published yesterday. Many arrived hours early, while several thought there j might have been a mistake in the f“p.m”, and were outside the, shop door at seVen in the morning. About 7.30 p.m, one of the applicants discovered a scrawled notice on a small piece of paper, requesting applicants to watch the same newspaper lor a further notice on May 21.
