AUSTRALIAN TAXATION

CIVIL SERVANTS AGAIN MILLION POUNDS WANTED CALL ON INTEREST ALSO CANBEKRA, March 20. A scheme to tax public servants' salaries to save £1,000,000 a year, was announced in the House of Representatives by Mr Scullin to-day. "This tax must stand or fall by the tax on interest. We will not allow one without the other,"' said Mr Scullin.

Sir Robert Gibson stated that if the Government's financial legislation were passed, the Commonwealth Bank would not carry out Parliament's instructions. SENATE FLAUTED AUSTRALIAN WATERSIDERS' ACTION Press Association.—Copyright. (Reed. 10.10 a.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. The Senate, by 20 votes "to 7, disallowed regulations under the Transport Workers' Act giving preference of employment to Australian Watersiders' Federation members. Immediately after the Senate adjourned the Executive Council met and approved new regulations similar to those just quashed and later a Gazette announced fresh regulations would operate forthwith.

The Senate was thus flouted, but has the opportunity of again expressing disapproval as regulations must come before it within 30 days. Senator Pearce in moving the disallowance challenged the Government to seek a double dissolution which he said it had several times hinted was desired.
