STRATFORD COUNTY* WORK .<
The fact that 20 men were .now employed in road work in tfie iTjitutawa district of the Stratford Council, under the No. 5 Unemployment Scheme, was' referred to in- the'course of discussion at the monthly jneetijig this morning. ? : ' T■ : .*.
The engineer, Mr. J. 1 "W",. Spence, said the men were doing quite well at their jobs. Cr. L. Bunn said he did not think the council was being treated quite fairly. If the authorities picked , out men and they would not go out to the work, they should be put off the list. The Engineer: Twenty of the best men available were sent out to Tututawa, but now an exchange of some of them was being asked for. Cr. Bunn: There are any amount of men in the town.
The engineer: The trouble is that there is work for two days only for single men. In response to inquiries, Mr. Spence said that eight days could be worked by married men, four days at the end and four days at the beginning of successive weeks. Cr. S. Pitt considered Cr. Bunn bad a grievance as far as the backblocks was concerned.
Cr. Bunn said he did not blame tb» men if they could get work in the. borough. "The Borough Council ia partly to blame," he added, "but I might be all wrong. They should put off men who refu#e to go out to the country." At a later stage Cr. Bunn stated that they wanted all the men who could be got for the work.
