Dairy Pay-outs For milk supplied during February for cheese-making, the Lowgarth and Ngaere dairy companies have decided to advance 9d a lb. of butter-fat.

Damage to Memorial. The Sergeant of Police, Stratford, Mr. J. J. Power, wrote as follows to the Borough Council concerning the damage done to the Memorial Gates, Victoria Park; "1 have to advise that searching inquiries have been made into the matter of damage to the memorial gates, Victoria Park, but to the present Ave have not been successful in facing the offender. Our investigations satisfy us that the damage to the gates was not as a result of bullets fired from any firearm. It would appear the damage was done with some instrument such as a sharp knife, spike, or similar instrument. Investigations show that the damage is not, recent. This matter has been noted with a view of prosecuting inquiries further, and also for the purpose of activities in the direction of preventing this kind of mischief."

Wanganui's Legal Costs. The cost of legal advipe to the Wa« nganui City Council over the past five years is to be the subject of a report by the Town Clerk, the information having been asked for by Coun J cillor J. J. Scott at a recent council meeting* Mr Scott said that there was an impression abroad in Wanganui that it was not possible to find out what the amount was. He could hardly credit that, but it would be interesting to know what the figures were. He asked tor a return cover* ing the period from 31st March, 1925, up to the present, says the Wanganui Chronicle. 'I think that when councillors get that report they will be surprised at the solicitor's reasonable charges," said the Mayor (Mr W. J. Rogers). "The City Solicitor hassaved this council many times, and it has been well serred by his advice. 1 am only a layman, but it is my opinion that in Mr Treadwell we have one of the soundest men in New Zealand." Councillors: "Hear, hear!"

Not Always a Disgrace Imprisonment is not always considered, a disgrace. An Auckland girl who belongs to the Kiwi Correspondence Club, an Empire-wide organisation, exchanges letters with an Indian hoy at Jacobabad, Sind., states the "Auckland Star." He is learning English, and writes an uncommonly good letter, but he apparently was not well up in the distinction between male and female names, for he first addiessed her under the impression that he was writing to a boy. Now he wants her photograph. By the last mail he sent a copy of a bright little publication called "The Children's News," which evidently emanates from some mission centre. It has a good deal to say ahout Gandhi, and on the page advertising itself is a list of heads, starting with "R. Ramon (in gaol)." This is mentioned just, in the same way as the

"B.Sc." of the man who immediately follows him on the list. There is a quaint touch in the advertisement. "Distinguished subscribers" are charged live rupees, while mere "subscribers" get off with two rupees. Evidently the distinguished ones correspond to the long list of "vice-presi-dents" with which so many sports clubs adorn their list of officers —in the fervent hope that each will be worth at. least a guinea.
