LAND FOR SETTLEMENT

GALATEA STATION SCHEME PROGRESS OF PREPARATIONS ROTORUA, March 11. Although work is now proceeding on the opening up of the Galatea station for dairying Under a Government land scheme, it is stated that it will be at least a year before the first farms are ready, for production and probably a further 12 or 18 months until all the area suitable is carrying its quotaa. The station was visited recently by the Commissioner of Crown Lands, who expressed himself as optimistic regarding the future of the land from a dairying point of yiew. The surveying of the station into areas suitable to the type of country and its soil is now proceeding, and the best reading, considering the topography of the district, is being laid out. These will all be formed and fencing completed before the laud is thrown open for settlement. Each section .will be valued separately, according tq Its valuation, access and other yital points, including water supply. A proportion of the Galatea station is to be repastured and developed on an improved sc’ale before it will be ready for immediate occupation when the station is finally handed over to the Government in March, 1932. The undeveloped areas will be ready about a year or so later.
