Many, however, are marooned in snowdrifts as much as 20 feet high. Terrific wind and high waters imperilled traffic on Lake. Michigan. The coastguard were unable to aid the struggling ships due to bad visibility. The city; is worried by the danger of fires while the streets are impassable, hut workers are endeavouring to cleaapassages for fire engines as well as milk trucks and necessary traffic. New York City suffered a million dollars damage and five deaths in a heavy north-east. gale. The streets were' flooded and radio and light services have broken down. Much damage has been inflicted to seaside properties by high tides and waves. Many families are unable to leave their homes in the Fulton Market district, which is flooded. Homes and buildings .on State Island are wrecked. Small vessels were driven three city blocks from the shore up the main streets.
