LATE BROTHER BASIL

BISHOP LISTON'S TRIBUTE AUCKLAND, March 7. The high esteem in which the late Rev. Brother Basil was held was strikingly shown by the large gathering which attended the celebration of Requiem Mass in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Auckland, yesterday. Bishop Liston presided, while the celebrant of Mass was the Rev. Father McKeefrey. Other officiating clergy were the Rev. Father O'Leary, dean; the Rev. Dr. Buxton, master of ceremonies; the R.ev. Father Colgan, subdeacon; and Deans Van Dyk and Murphy, assistants at the throne. Monsignor Cahill, Archdeacon Holbrook and the Rev. Father Eccleton, parish priest at Tuakau, were also present in the Sanctuary. The congregation included the pupils of the Sacred Heart College, of which Brother Basil was the first director, and the boys of the Marist Brothers' School at Vermont Street. The Sacred Heart College Old Boys' Association was represented by Mr. K. A. Snedden and Mr. G. Ricketts. In a brief address Bishop Liston referred to Brother Basil's long and deyoted service to Christian education in New Zealand. At the conclusion of Mass the funeral cortege left for Panmure Cemetery, where interment took place.
