FIRE FIGHTERS GO FAST
STRATFORD BEAT ELTHAM CHALLENGE SHIELD WRESTED FROM HOLDERS On Victoria Park, Stratford, yesterday afternoon, the Stratford Fire Brigade beat the Eltham Brigade in the annual event for the Challenge Shield by winning two of the three events in the competitions. A feature of the day's runs was the record registered by the Stratford team in the five-men carry-gear event, when two seconds were clipped off the previous fastest time. The Eltham men were in good form also, as their time was only one-fifth of a second slower than the last record time.
There has always been keen competition between the two brigades for the challenge shield, and this year was no exception. Messrs. E. D. Evans (Stratford) and A. H. NuttaU (Eltham), who are the promoters of the competition, have reason to feel pleased at its success. The details of the runs were: Two-men Coupling. —Stratford, 32 3-ssec, beat Eltham, 34sec. Five-men Carry-gear.—Stratford, 26 sec, beat Eltham, 28 I-ssec. Three-men' Disabled. —Eltham, 46 sec, beat Stratford, 51sec. The attendance of the public was above the average at these demonstrations, and the runs were followed with interest. The members of the Stratford Brigade engaged in the three events "WGrG J—— Five-Man Event: Supt, Davis, Dep.Supt. E. Brocklebank, Fireman D. Butcher, Fireman W. Boyd and Fireman S. Phillips. Two-Man Event: Supt. Davis and Fireman Boyd. Three-Man Event: Dep.-Supt. E. Brocklebank, Fireman W. Boyd and Fireman D. Butcher.
