TO REPLACE TERRITORIAL TRAINING
GYMNASIA SUGGESTED. Speaking at Inst night's meeting of the Sports and Pastimes Club, Mr. J. W. McMillan said that there had been a suggestion to run a gymnasium, bub that would be a big undertaking. To ensure success the support of the whole of the people of Stratford would be needed. ' If the suggestion \v"as revived now it might . i aive a better chance of success. There must be an exceptionally good man in charge of a gymnasium. A. gymnasium was the best possible thing for the welfare of young people. Ho •thought the money now spent on the Territorial system might be much better spent on gymnasia. The l-ov-ernment might build them or subsidise clubs which built them. In his opinion the physical development of a lad was more important than teaching him to drill. He had nothing against stho Defence officers, but thought physical culture officers would be more useful. He had been, in the volunteers, and, except on the technical side, he had. not learnt anything he was not taughjt at school. Gymnasia would be better for the country and better for the boys.
