CHAMPION BELT WINNER BEERY’S POPULAR VICTORY

TRENT] I AM, March 4. The rifle shooting Champion Belt has again been fought for and the ovation that the winner received when the result was known proved how popular
the victory was. There was a large gallery when the final' was fired, the interest of the majority being centred at targets eight and ' 23, where .Masefield and Berry took their respective places. .Maselield got the first sighler away, it was a magpie, while Berry registered a nuss, followed by a, magpie. His first business shot was also a magpe. Masefield found the centr twice and then scored two, followed bj two bulls, four, three lives And finished with 3, making his total 44. Berry got two then a bull, a magpie, two bulls, two inners, finishing with a bull, and total of 42. Mclvor (Betone) and McViear (Waipukurau) tied for third places, the former winning the shoot-off. The prizes were presented by Colonel H. Pilkington. On leaving Nelson Col. 1 C (to Berry joined the Tararua Be* fence Rifle Club. At, Nirealm in 3827 Berrv won the Tararua Ritle Club’s championship and has also won several cups and trophies. Early in the New Tear ho competed in the North Island championship meeting at Wanganui, finishing in sixteenth place. Berry is an unassuming young man, whose win was decidedly popular Ho used a cutdown long Lee Enfield throughout the meeting. The present in the third oc- ! casion he has taken part in the National meeting at Trcntham. The service champion, Staff-Scrgt.-Major d. Kearney, of th. New Zealand Permanent 'Staff, Napier, is the most I notable rifle shot in the regular military forces of the Dominion to-day. In 15)2-1 Kearney first took part in a National Rifle Association meeting. (Since that time he has attended every meeting a; Trcntham. He was also at Trent ham for the Army Rifle meeting in 1924 and, with the exception of 1925, when there was no meeting on account of the influenza epidemic, he has attended every subsequent Army meeting. Kearney is the present holder of the King's Medal. In ,1928 he won the B Grade of the Army Championship. His first experience of shooting with the sling was when lie joined the Napier Rifle Club in .1925, although before that ho had done considerable service shooting.
