GERMAN ATHLETE DR. PELTZER AT SYDNEY VISITOR REPOSES TO RUN i ‘‘BRUTALLY*CANDID.” ‘ SYDNEY, Jan. 19. Dr. Peltzcr was hooted near the close of a wonderfully successful athletic carnival at the Sydney Cricket Grounds yesterday. He refused to run against the local champion, Golding, in the quarter-mile section of the relay race on the ground that he w T as suffering from rheumatism and heart trouble. When the official announcer made the fact known the huge crowd hooted him. The officials were compelled to And a substitute for Golding in order to keep faith with the public, who came to see Pcltzer, and the choice fell upon R. D. Norman. During the progress of the relay contest, when Peltzcr began to overhaul. Norman, the crowd began hooting which never ceased until Pcltzer reached the dressing room, where he was obviously distressed. Ho explained that he did not feel up to the task of meeting that great four-forty man Golding, adding “Any doctor will tell you an athlete should not run i'u my state of health.* The official announcer prior to the race had told the crowd that Dr. Pcltzer had flatly refused to race against Golding. A section of the press expressed the opinion that this was brutally candid and that language less discourteous could have been used. Other press opinions do not spare Dr. Pcltzer, whom they describe as “extremely temperamental. The chief events of the meeting resulted as follows: —

International 880 Yards.—Dr. Peltzor (Germany) 1, S. Stuart 2, A. Heath 3. Won by 16 yards. Time: 1.56 4-5. International Challenge Relay (1430 yards).—The Internationals (Lermond, Peltzer and Emton defeated the Australians (Heath, Norman and Power). Time: 3.10 1-5. 440 Yards Scratch Race. The first division was won by G. A. Golding. Time: 48 3-10scc, which is an Australianand New South Wales record. 1000 Metres Walk. —W. J. Clarke. Time: 4.5. Hop, Step, and Jump.—A. W. Winter 47ft. 3in.). Throwing the Javelin. —J. Boyce (164 ft. 21in). Throwing the Discus. —M. Saar (107 ft. Ilin). Among the women’s events Miss Clarice Kennedy won the 80 metres hurdles in 12 l-ssec, equally the world’s record. Miss C. won the 100 yards sci’atch race in 11 3-10 sec. —An Australian record.
