SENATE DEBATE PROCEEDS ' Tfce American House of Representatives is still occupied with a dehate on prohibition, a move to appropriate fifteen million dollars for enforcement purposes meeting with strenuous opposition in the form of amendments. These were dedereated. WASHINGTON, Jan. 18. The chief developments in the prohibition Controversy to-day were that Senator Watson asked for a national referendum on prohibition. He reaffirmed the belief in law, but said that the people should be allowed to express their attitude directly, i o House of Representatives was wracked fry a debate over a 15,000,000 dollar appropriation for the Treasury e partment for enforcement purposes. Senator West made six unsuccessful efforts ‘to introduce amendments that would have altered the purpose of the measure and was defeated, overwhelmingly, each time. Prohibition Commissionar Doran defended prohibition forces against charges of murder, brutality and law violation.
